Vittorio Emanuele Monument

One of Rome's most controversial landmarks, the Vittorio Emanuele Monument. Victor Emmanuel II was the first monarch of Italy in the mid to late 1800's.

A number of buildings were demolished to provide space for the structure, which includes an altar to the fatherland and a large bronze equestrian statue of Vittorio Emanuele II.

The monument is build of pure white marble and features majestic stairways, tall corinthian columns, fountains, a huge equestrian statue of Victor Emmanuel and two statues of goddess Victoria riding on quadrigas (1). The monument holds the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with an eternal flame, built under the statue of Italy after World War I. The base of the structure also houses the museum of Italian Reunification.

Also know as Altare della Patria (Altar of the Nation) or "Il Vittoriano"

(1) A quadriga is a four-horse chariot
