33 meter tall statue of Buddha in Popchusa temple.
This 33 meter tall statue of Buddha is located in Popchusa temple, Songnisan National Park. It's made of 160 tons of brass and sits on top of a shrine. In the shrine there is a gold Buddha.
Popchusa is one of the largest and most magnificent temples in Korea, maybe in the whole North East Asia.
When it was build, it was one of the largest sanctuaries in Korea.
Before this stature, there was another in concrete. It only lasted for a few years (18 years) before it began to crack. In 1986 it was demolished and the making of the new began. In 1989 this statue was completed.
