Inside Temppeliaukio Church
The church without a tower.
The large Taivallahti congregation in Töölö had no church of its own, but it did have a site for one. It was a granite outcrop rising in the middle of a large square called Temppeliaukio ("Temple Square").
When the church, designed by Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen, was being built, it created no small amount of controversy, because its construction involved scooping out a large hole from the granite outcrop and covering it over with a slightly concave roof. There were no adornments other than the copper sheets in the ceiling. The church didn’t even have a belfry.
But when the church was consecrated in 1969, doubts evaporated and its soon became a place of pilgrimage for people of all religions and nationalities.
