Inside the old market hall
The building was designed by Gustaf Nyström, and it was completed in 1889. The Old Helsinki Market Hall at the Etelaranta close to the South Harbour. Here, you can get everything for a delicious meal. The Old Market Hall in Helsinki has been serving inhabitants of Helsinki and visitors to the city since 1889. During the last century, foodstuffs were sold mainly outdoors until in the end of the century increasing concerns for food safety moved most of the trade indoors. The first market hall in Finland was erected in the South Harbor. The building designed by the architect G. Nyström was finished in the summer of 1889. The regulations directed that meat products, eggs, cheese and produce were to be sold at the market hall. At the turn of the century part of fish sales were also moved to the hall. The Old Market Hall was refurbished into its present state just before its 100th birthday. Today the hall has modern storage facilities and equipment. One thing still remains unchanged: The Old Market Hall is a living and well-functioning meeting and shopping place for both people who live in Helsinki and visitors alike.
